Favourite destinations in Greece

Using the map of Greece, texts and photos to help you discover the country.

Greece is a magnificent country. We all know how popular the beautiful beaches, ancient monuments and picturesque sites of the Greek countryside are. Greece is known for its rich history, amazing cuisine and friendly people. All these elements make up an effective and attractive tourist 'package', which is enhanced by the natural beauty of the landscape. (see map of Greece)

In what follows, we look at the favourite travel destinations that are more or less well known to Greeks, but also to foreign visitors, who choose them mainly for their holidays. (see Wikipedia)

Greek civilisation and Athens

Athens is certainly not the most beautiful city in the world, or even in Greece. However, the Greek capital has many tourist destinations and, above all, attractions that make a visit a must.

Athens is certainly not the most beautiful city in the world, or even in Greece. However, the Greek capital has many tourist destinations and, above all, attractions that make a visit a must. In Athens, you'll find the Acropolis, dominated by the Parthenon, Lycabetta Hill, the picturesque Plaka district and a plethora of museums, including the Acropolis Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art, etc. (see map of Greece).

Santorini: The famous Greek island

Santorini's fame extends to the four corners of the world, from Europe to the United States and Japan. It's a magnificent island with breathtaking sunsets and picturesque Aegean buildings, in a seemingly inhospitable landscape that has been architecturally tamed in the most beautiful of ways.

The island has many beaches, water sports, beach bars and clubs, and restaurants, but prices are a little high, at least for the average Greek. Santorini is the ideal tourist destination for couples and young people, but there are also many foreign visitors who decide to get married on this beautiful island. (see map of Santorini, Greece)

Mykonos, the trendy one

If you're looking for some summer fun, Mykonos is the first destination that should be on your agenda. It's a beautiful volcanic island, known for its lively nightlife and stunning beaches. There is no shortage of nightclubs and bars, and the parties start early and finish late, or vice versa.

However, Mykonos also offers quieter places to explore, with picturesque little villages and beaches of exceptional beauty. (see map of Mykonos, Greece)

The diversity of Cretan landscapes

Crete is Greece's largest island and is known for its beautiful scenery and rich history. Although much of the island is easily accessible, there are many other places that remain unexplored, despite their beauty, due to the rugged terrain.

Crete combines many advantages. It boasts monuments and sites from the ancient Minoan civilisation, such as the archaeological sites of Knossos and Festos, which were centres of the famous civilisation.

Also boasts superb beaches with crystal-clear blue waters, as well as delicious cuisine, well known through the Cretan diet, which can be enjoyed in the island's many restaurants (see map of Crete, Greece).

Rhodes: Island of the Knights

Rhodes is a unique island in Greece. It has the picturesque character of an Aegean island, but is best known for its medieval forts and unique architecture, found nowhere else in Greece. Linked to the history of the Crusades. The old town of Rhodes is an excellent example of this historical mix. That's why it attracts so many visitors.

Of course, there are many beautiful beaches around the island, known for their clear waters and golden sand. In some parts of the island, such as Rhodes town, Faliraki, Lindos, etc., the nightlife is also very lively in summer (see map of Rhodes, Greece).

Meteora: A miracle of nature

If there's one place in Greece that can be described as special and unique in terms of natural beauty, it's Meteora. These are natural rock formations of unrivalled volume and height, where imposing monasteries dominate the summit, with exceptional architecture and aesthetics.

Most of the monasteries were built in the 14th century and the whole complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admiration and majesty are the feelings that overwhelm visitors to Kalambaka and the surrounding area for this uniquely beautiful natural wonder (see map of Meteora, Greece).

The eternal Greece

With such a rich cultural heritage and geographical position, and such a diverse landscape, Greece is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Famous monuments from Greek antiquity, a unique history, sites such as Olympia, Delphi.

From the magnificent beaches of Santorini to the natural rock formations of Meteora, there is no shortage of beauty in the Cyclades, a land blessed by the gods of antiquity.
