The town of Rethymnon
More discreet but just as charming as Chania, the old town of town of Réthymnon is romantic, yet cheerful, with a student atmosphere radiating from its cobbled streets and the lively modern cafés of the Venetian seafront port. The Venetian mansions and fountains are sure to lead you to Fortezza, the jewel of the city, a fortress on the hill of Paleokastro, a group of grandiose buildings with medieval charm. It goes without saying that on the way back you'll linger in one of the shops in the old town for a spot of shopping or to sample a little - or a lot - of raki and, above all, Cretan cuisine.

Preveli
Every step you take on the demanding road to the beach is worthwhile. Behind the small palm forest of Preveli, the magnificent beach, the famous monastery of Preveli and the river Kourtaliotis, which flows into the sea. Pure magic to be experienced without moderation, a spectacle to behold and then the pleasure of an invigorating swim. Preveli is about 40 km south of the county of Rethymnon (see map of Rethymnon).

Plakias
A fishing village and a huge beach, with sections reserved for all tastes, including nudists. Plakias is a cosmopolitan coastal village with a family feel, ideal for water sports, hiking or lazing in the shade under the tamarisk trees. Located in the southern part of the Rethymnon region, it has become very popular in recent years - fortunately, the endless golden sandy beach is suitable for everyone (see map of Rethymnon).

Agios Pavlos
Perhaps the highest dunes you'll see in Greece, the ones that rise up behind the beach at Agios Pavlos are breathtaking with their... 30 metre curves. They end gently on a long sandy beach bathed in the deep blue of the South Sea. You can dive until sunset, and it's well worth climbing to the top of the dunes to watch the sun set (see map of Rethymnon).

Anogia
One of Crete's legendary villages, Anogia keeps tradition alive, with Cretan songs, weaving crafts, traditional cafés and the soundtrack of the Xylouris family's music from here. In other words, one of the most authentic corners of Psiloritis (see map of Rethymnon).

Arkadi Monastery
The most glorious monastery on the island, and perhaps in the whole country, is located in the municipality of Arkadi, where the holocaust took place during the revolution of 1866-69. In this place of resistance, which raised the awareness of the Western world to the liberation of the island, you can still see the guardhouse, the rebuilt gate, the monks' cells and the dynamited powder magazine, which still stands without a roof (see website KTEL buses)
